Welcome to the road blog!

On 13th June 2012, solo rider Chris Armishaw will set out on his bike from Oceanside, California, as part of the Race Across America. Chris will aim to cycle over 3,000 miles to Annapolis, Maryland, in just 10 days. He will be cycling to raise awareness and money for the charity Action Medical Research. This blog will chart this epic journey, from the point-of-view of both Chris and his road crew.

RAAM is one of the toughest events in the world for all teams, riders and crew, on the road particularly in the desert there is absolutely no margin for error, our progress was fine and entirely on track with our race plan, one small miscalculation followed by other situations meant our race was over at the end of day 2, after which point we would have been out of the desert heat, one less challenge to deal with and still on track with our 10 day race plan. Out of the race, we continue to ride most of the RAAM route to bring a story home for our sponsors and to value their support as much as we can. The team are bitterly disappointed but our experience and learning's will make us stronger for when we come back or take on a bigger challenge......we will aim to post photo's to show our sponsors jersey's still in action across the US.

  1. Hi guys

I am a 4-man team RAAM finisher (2010) from the UK. I am preparing for a solo attempt in a few years (intentionally vague!) and I am interested in race strategies. I am also a sports scientist so I am interested in the science behind race preparation and execution. I follow and support UK teams and I was sorry to read that you were not able to finish. I wonder if you are able to share what happened to Chris and the team so that I, and others, can learn? Or if you would prefer could you PM me? Good luck with the rest of the ride, stay safe and here's to a return for you all to RAAM in the future. Best regards, Peter

    1. Hi Peter, Chris here, bitterly disappointed with the outcome but not the experience which was/ is amazing and the learning's huge, nothing can really prepare you for what's out here unless you speak to riders that have been part of RAAM. I aim to be back next year or 2014, Race Across America or Ride Across America, RAAM is a damned hard event for the rider and crew, there are so many things to take on board that I would be more than happy to share with you, let's keep in touch, back in the UK end June, all the best Chris (still riding hard and with enthusiasm!)

  2. Hi Peter & Chris,

I am a 2011 4 team finisher aiming to take part in the solo event in 2013/14 and am based in London. It would be amazing if we could get at least 3 UK based guys entered in the same year. Once you're back in the country, perhaps we could get together for a chat?

    James
